Manuel grew up near Paris, France. After completing his undergraduate studies at the Ecole Normale Superieure, Manuel discovered visual neurophysiology during a training in the Freeman lab (UC Berkeley) and completed his PhD in Neuroscience in the laboratory of Yves Fregnac (CNRS, Gif-sur-Yvette, France). He then moved to Charleston, South Carolina, where he pursued his interest in imaging dendritic responses to sensory stimuli, first in the cat visual cortex with Prakash Kara and then in the mouse somatosensory cortex with Andy Shih. Since joining the Wang lab in 2019, Manuel has been researching the cortical substrates of pain and pain avoidance behavior.
